Chapter 26: A Thousand Years of Peace

Peace, and joy, and truth, and love, and knowledge, and plenty, and glory will cover the face of the earth as the waters do the sea.1

With the removal of the wicked from the earth, the world will enter a glorious period of a thousand years of peace. The Saints and their posterity will be richly blessed for their patience in the trials through which they have passed. The political Kingdom of God will expand, spreading order throughout all regions of the globe. The Church will shine forth, “clear as the moon, and fair as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.”2 The Saints will enter holy temples and participate in those saving ordinances that will link their families and ancestors back to Father Adam and Mother Eve.

The prophets rejoiced to see the future days of the Millennium in vision, and the scriptures are saturated with prophecies of “the great day of the Lord” that will someday come to the earth.3 Since we know that a day on the Father’s celestial home planet is the same as a thousand years here upon the earth,4 this scriptural phrase of “great day of the Lord” refers to the thousand years of peace that will exist during the Millennium.

The Righteous Will Be Blessed and Rewarded

When the tribulations of the last days have concluded and the night of darkness and turmoil is over, the Saints will be rewarded for their faithfulness. It will be the dawning of a glorious epoch that will be so immensely wonderful that the memories of our previous troubles will pass from our minds like waking from a terrible nightmare. Our children will grow up in peace and righteousness. The prophet Isaiah tells us:

“The Lord shall comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; and He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.”5

The prophet Nephi, in quoting the prophet Isaiah, also tells us how glorious the Millennium will be for the righteous and their families:

And then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb; and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf, and the young lion, and the fatling, together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

“And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”6

Not only will the righteous be blessed physically and spiritually in their lives, but the Lord will fill their minds with overflowing quantities of knowledge and truth. Nephi continued:

“Wherefore, the things of all nations shall be made known; yea, all things shall be made known unto the children of men. There is nothing which is secret save it shall be revealed; there is no work of darkness save it shall be made manifest in the light; and there is nothing which is sealed upon the earth save it shall be loosed.

“Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed; and Satan shall have power over the hearts of the children of men no more, for a long time.”7

The End of All Wars Will Profoundly Affect the Human Race

All of humanity will be blessed because of the peace that will cover the earth. War and dissension, which have caused so much heartache and death upon the earth, will no longer plague humanity. The strategies of war will no longer be taught and studied. Military institutions will be shuttered and left to decay. The instruments of war will be converted into implements for farming and agriculture, and the people will turn to the Lord God in an obedient desire to receive His peace and counsel. Isaiah told us:

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, when the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.

“And many people shall go and say, ‘Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths;’ for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

“And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares, and their spears into pruning-hook---nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”8

The Saints Will Inherit Eternal Glories with the Lord

Those who are faithful in the last days will be blessed to enjoy the presence of the resurrected Son of God after His Return. As the Lord has stated in the Doctrine and Covenants:

“I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years.”9

“Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, from henceforth, when the Lord shall come, and old things shall pass away, and all things become new, they shall rise from the dead and shall not die after, and shall receive an inheritance before the Lord, in His holy city.”10

“And the Lord, even the Savior, shall stand in the midst of His people, and shall reign over all flesh.”11

The holy cities of New Jerusalem and Old Jerusalem will rise in splendor, in tribute to the Lord God Jehovah, who will visit and reside within them. Isaiah poignantly described the beauty and glory of these cities, their sacred edifices, and the peace that will exist there:

“Behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. . . . This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”12

Funerals, death and mourning will not exist among the Saints. When a person arrives at the end of his life, he will merely experience a brief and momentary passage from mortality to immortality. The Lord promised us:

“And he that liveth when the Lord shall come, and hath kept the faith, blessed is he; nevertheless, it is appointed to him to die at the age of man. Wherefore, children shall grow up until they become old; old men shall die; but they shall not sleep in the dust, but they shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye.”13

Because death will no longer exist, the Lord has promised the righteous that they will not experience any sorrow. Life will be full of joy and goodness. The Lord said:

“And there shall be no sorrow because there is no death. In that day an infant shall not die until he is old; and his life shall be as the age of a tree; and when he dies he shall not sleep, that is to say in the earth, but shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious.”14

Hostility and hatred will not exist. Satan will be unable to tempt mankind. The righteous will be blessed with anything they ask of the Lord:

“And in that day the enmity of man, and the enmity of beasts, yea, the enmity of all flesh, shall cease from before my face. And in that day whatsoever any man shall ask, it shall be given unto him. And in that day Satan shall not have power to tempt any man.”15

The earth itself will be changed, and the curse that it received in Adam’s day will be removed. The soil will return to a state in which it spontaneously brings forth its abundance like the Garden of Eden, and mankind will not need to spend hours in the hot sun removing the pernicious weeds that can quickly overcome a crop. Herbicides and pesticides will no longer cover our food. These chemicals will disappear from the land, along with the potential damage they can cause to rivers and streams, and the fish and birds that accidentally ingest them. Elder Parley P. Pratt said:

“The curse will be taken from off the earth, and it will cease to bring forth thorns and thistles, and become fertile as it were a paradise, while sickness, premature death, and all their attendant train of pains and sorrows will scarce be known upon its face; thus peace, and joy, and truth, and love, and knowledge, and plenty, and glory, will cover the face of the earth as the waters do the sea.

“The tabernacle of God and His sanctuary will be with man, in the midst of the holy cities; and joy and gladness will fill the measure of their cup.”16

All of this will be the blessing upon the heads of the righteous who have faithfully persevered through the difficult times of the last days. The Lord has promised great blessings to those who are steadfast:

“The earth shall be given unto them [the righteous] for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation. For the Lord shall be in their midst, and His glory shall be upon them, and He will be their King and their lawgiver.”17

The History of the World Will Be Revealed in Great Detail in a Millennial Vision

At the commencement of the Millennium, the Saints of God will be shown a comprehensive vision in which they will view the entire history of the world. They will learn all of the details of its true history, including the secret acts of conspiring men. The Lord told the Prophet Joseph:

“And then shall the first angel again sound his trump in the ears of all living, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the mighty works of God in the first thousand years. And then shall the second angel sound his trump, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the thoughts and intents of their hearts, and the mighty works of God in the second thousand years---and so on, until the seventh angel shall sound his trump; and he shall stand forth upon the land and upon the sea, and swear in the name of Him who sitteth upon the throne, that there shall be time no longer; and Satan shall be bound . . . and shall not be loosed for the space of a thousand years.”18

This explosion of knowledge in the Millennium will not only include the complete history of mankind, but also the details about the creation of the earth, and many other secrets of the Gods. The Lord promised the Saints:

“Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when the Lord shall come, He shall reveal all things---things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made, and the purpose and the end thereof---things most precious, things that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven.

“And all they who suffer persecution for my name, and endure in faith, though they are called to lay down their lives for my sake yet shall they partake of all this glory.”19

When this time arrives, the Saints will be truly living in the dispensation of the fullness of times. A fullness of knowledge will be given to them and they will increase in wisdom and truth. As President Brigham Young prophesied:

“It is the fullness of times. It is the dispensation of all dispensations, and will excel in magnificence and glory every dispensation that has ever been committed to the children of men upon this earth. The Lord will bring again Zion, redeem His Israel, plant His standard upon the earth, and establish the laws of His Kingdom, and those laws will prevail.”20

The Continents Will Join Back Together

At some point in time during the Millennium, the continents, which were divided anciently in the days of Peleg,21 will join back together again. All of the continents will become one large land mass, as it was at the time of the earth’s creation.22 Travel upon the ocean will no longer be required to journey from one nation to another. The Lord said:

“And He shall utter His voice out of Zion, and He shall speak from Jerusalem, and His voice shall be heard among all people; and it shall be a voice as the voice of many waters, and great thunder, which shall break down the mountains, and the valleys shall not be found.

“He shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land; and the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided. And the Lord, even the Savior, shall stand in the midst of His people, and shall reign over all flesh.”23

The City of Enoch Will Return and Dwell on the Earth Again

It will be during the Millennium that the translated city of Enoch will return to the earth after its 5,000 year absence.24 This will fulfill a covenant that the Lord made with the prophet Enoch.25 Enoch was promised that when the people of the earth become sufficiently righteous, they will be blessed to enjoy the presence of the city of Enoch, which will return to the earth. We learn this from a revelation that was given to the prophet Noah right after the Flood. The Lord told Noah:

“The bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant, which I made unto thy father Enoch; that, when men should keep all my commandments, Zion should again come on the earth, the city of Enoch which I have caught up unto myself.

“And this is mine everlasting covenant, that when thy posterity shall embrace the truth, and look upward, then shall Zion look downward, and all the heavens shall shake with gladness, and the earth shall tremble with joy; and the general assembly of the church of the Firstborn shall come down out of heaven, and possess the earth, and shall have place until the end come. And this is mine everlasting covenant, which I made with thy father Enoch.”26

Many Other Important Millennial Events Will Take Place

Throughout the Millennium, Old Jerusalem will be an important center of religious devotion, and New Jerusalem will be the sacred location from which the political Kingdom of God is administered. As Isaiah prophesied, “out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”27

At the temple in Old Jerusalem, the Levite priests will offer sacrifices once again as their forefathers did. These sacrifices will continue throughout the Millennium.28 The righteous Saints will have the opportunity to visit the holy city of Old Jerusalem during the Millennium, and to view these important sacrifices that commemorate the atoning sacrifice of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Many great and important meetings will occur in both Old and New Jerusalem during the Millennium. We were given a hint about some of these meetings when Heber C. Kimball told us:

“You will see the day when Presidents [Brigham] Young, [Heber C.] Kimball, and [Daniel H.] Wells, and the Twelve Apostles will be in Jackson County, Missouri, laying out your inheritances . . . and Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and David [W. Patten], and Parley [P. Pratt].

“And the day will be when I will see those men in the general assembly of the Church of the First Born, in the great council of God in Jerusalem, too. Will we want you to be along? I heard Joseph say twice that Brother Brigham and I should be in that council in Jerusalem, when there should be a uniting of the two divisions of God’s government.”29

A Marvelous Work and a Wonder Will Fill the World During the Millennium

It will be during the Millennium that the Saints will behold the true fruition of the marvelous work and wonder that was begun by the Lord in this last dispensation through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Saints will experience a new way of life as they are able to focus more fully upon the things of eternity. President Brigham Young beautifully described the important work that will occur as the Saints perform the work of salvation for their departed ancestors:

“You will enter into the temple of the Lord and begin to offer up ordinances before the Lord for your dead. Says this or that man, I want to save such a person---I want to save my father; and he straightway goes forth in the ordinance of baptism, and is confirmed, and washed, and anointed, and ordained to the blessings of the holy priesthood for his ancestors.

“Before this work is finished, a great many of the elders of Israel in Mount Zion will become pillars in the temple of God, to go no more out: they will eat and drink and sleep there; and they will often have occasion to say, ‘Somebody came into the temple last night; we did not know who he was, but he was no doubt a brother, and told us a great many things we did not before understand. He gave us the names of a great many of our forefathers that are not on record, and he gave me my true lineage and the names of my forefathers for hundreds of years back.

“He said to me, ‘You and I are connected in one family: there are the names of your ancestors; take them and write them down, and be baptized and confirmed, and save such and such ones, and receive of the blessings of the eternal priesthood for such and such an individual, as you do for yourselves.’

“This is what we are going to do for the inhabitants of the earth. When I look at it, I do not want to rest a great deal, but be industrious all the day long; for when we come to think upon it, we have no time to lose, for it is a pretty laborious work.”30

Even though the wonderful days of the Millennium may seem to be a long way off, if the Saints wish to, they can bring a part of the Millennium into their lives and hearts today. They do not need to wait for the distant future to enjoy these blessings now. President Young explained:

“The Millennium consists in this---every heart in the Church and kingdom of God being united in one; the kingdom increasing to the overcoming of everything opposed to the economy of heaven, and Satan being bound, and having a seal set upon him. All things else will be as they are now, we shall eat, drink, and wear clothing.

“Let the people be holy, and the earth under their feet will be holy. Let the people be holy, and filled with the Spirit of God, and every animal and creeping thing will be filled with peace; the soil of the earth will bring forth in its strength, and the fruits thereof will be meat for man. The more purity that exists, the less is the strife; the more kind we are to our animals, the more will peace increase and the savage nature of the brute creation vanish away.

“If the people will not serve the devil another moment whilst they live, if this congregation is possessed of that spirit and resolution, here in this house is the Millennium. Let the inhabitants of this city be possessed of that spirit, let the people of the territory be possessed of that spirit, and here is the Millennium. Let the whole people of the United States be possessed of that spirit, and here is the Millennium, and so will it spread over all the world.

“Let us cease from all evil, and do all the good we can to the nations abroad, and by and by the veil of the covering will be taken from the earth, and the inhabitants see as they are seen.”31

What a priceless gift we have been given by our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ! Though trials may come upon us, we can enjoy the tranquility of the future Millennial day through the calm and comforting voice of the Holy Spirit.

In addition to this pre-Millennial peace that can be ours, we can also find solace and serenity in our lives by preparing ourselves spiritually, physically, financially, mentally and emotionally for the events of the latter days. The prophets have warned us that this preparation will be absolutely essential so that we can survive during the events of the last days.
