Third Nephi

Question: Why did the title “Third Nephi” not appear in early publications of the Book of Mormon?

Answer: Up until the 1879 edition of the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi was known as “The book of Nephi the son of Nephi who was the son of Helaman.”

In 1879, Elder Orson Pratt recommended that the title of the book be changed to “Third Nephi.” He also recommended that the title of the succeeding book be changed to “Fourth Nephi.” His recommendations were accepted.
